In 1856 ,the British had managed to control over almost the entire Indian subcontinent. They considered the Indian soldiers inferior and hence, gave them low quality jobs. One such job included the Enfield rifle. In this rifle before loading one had to tear the back of the cartridge with his teeth. In the back of the cartridge, there was some type of grease and a rumour spread that it was the grease of the fats of cows and pigs. In India, the two major religious sects are thosr of the Hindus and Muslims and they felt offensive because cow is holy for the Hindu and the pig was taboo for the Muslims. The things boiled over when a Indian sepoy named Mangal Pandey of the Barrackpore battalion refused to work and when forced attacked his British officers. He was executed. This caused an outcry and led to the First War of Independence.
