Indian society was already divided mainly on caste basis when Britishers came to India. With their coming social change became fast and new social classes emerged. A process of social transformation started, which resulted in confusion in society.
The noncooperation movement started with middle class participation in the cities. Thousands of students left government controlled schools and colleges. The Council election was boycotted in most of the provinces. Lawyers gave up their legal practice. The middle class also impacted the economy of the country. Liquor shops picketed. Foreign goods were boycotted. Production of Indian textile mills and hand looms went up. Import of goods declined.
The movement slowed down in the city because of the following reasons:
1. The movement declared the use of Khadi cloth which was expensive and the urban poor can't use them.
2. The indian instituitions were too slow so students have to go back to british institutions. Siilarly lawyers had to join again to the courts.
