Niches can change due to reasons beyond the control of the organisms. For example, temperature on earth can go up or down, water levels can vary or there could be meteorite hits.

• If a population of reproducing organisms was suited to a particular niche and the niche was drastically altered, the population could be wiped out.

• However, if some variations were to be present in a few individuals in these populations, they would be able to resist the drastic changes there and survive to reproduce further.

• Therefore, variation is beneficial for the maintenance of body design features that allow the organism to use a particular niche in the ecosystem.

• Variations can be beneficial or harmful to an individual organism but they increase the survival chance of a species over time.

• Variation is the raw material for evolution because successful variations suitable for the particular niche are selected by nature.

• Reproduction is therefore linked to the stability of the populations of species
