Synapses have the following importance in the body:
-They ensure unidirectional flow of impulse and inhibit retrograde flow.
-Synapses allow make integration of impulses possible. This because an impulse can be dispersed to various post synaptic neurons.
-Synapses also make it possible for the summation of impulses where the generation of enough neurotransmitters are ensured so as to increase the chances for binding to the post synaptic membrane for the generation of an impulse.
-The allow for the filtering of impulses that are repeated and not necessarily important.
Without synapses, the central nervous system would be under constant bombardment with impulses which would cause central nervous system fatigue. The responses would be slow and backward flow of impulses would lead to uncoordinated functioning.
