The importance of cell membrane is as follows:
1. It protects the cell and separates the interior of cell from the external environment.
2. It is semi-permeable in nature and thereby selectively allows entry of molecules, thereby maintaining osmolarity.
3. It plays a major role in transporting nutrients into the cell and waste(toxic products) outside the cell.
4. Helps in maintaining a fixed environment inside the cell, thereby maintaining the pH and survivability of the cell.
5. It's flexibility helps in survivability in various environments. It is due to the fluid mosaic structure of the membrane.
