In South India, especially Tamilnadu the classical dance form bharatanatyam involved as a temple dance. The chola rulers patronised this dance, it is a beautiful form of dance and required precise hand and foot movements along with expressions rendered through eyes and lips, it is the oldest dance form of India .The costume used in this dance is coloured and rich.

In North India, Kathak evolved as the distinct dance form. Lucknow gharana is known for its Grace and facial expressions the Jaipur gharana is known for its fast ryhytms .
