The Constitution is important because it protects individual freedom, and its fundamental principles govern the country . The Constitution places the government's power in the hands of the citizens. It limits the power of the government and establishes a system of checks and balances.

Hey Mate!!
Here is your answer
Importance of a constitution in a democratic country is that, if a constitution is not written people will do as they want to. Nobody could question the government. Everybody would have right to freedom and do whatever they want. There would be no courts and even there were the court won't know which rule to follow. There would be no way to decide who would become the party in power and hence India would not be called as a democracy.
☺ Hope this will help you.
