Why Democracy is So Important and So Cool. A functioning democracy is the form of government that provides its citizens with the most freedom, the most opportunity, the greatest prosperity, and the most comfortable life. It is also the most stable form and by far the most fun.

Answer:

Democracy is no guarantee of good government, or even that human rights will be respected. Its main importance is that it provides legitimacy for government. As Thomas Jefferson put it, “governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” This idea is commonplace now, but at the time it was a huge slap in the face of all the monarchs of Europe. They ruled by what was called the “divine right of kings” — i.e., God chose them to rule, and their legitimacy derived from this supposed holy appointment. Democracy overthrew that idea and asserted that the proper source of legitimacy is the consent of the governed.

The other major feature of democracy is that the people get the government they voted for. If they made bad voting decisions, they get bad government. They have no one to blame but themselves. That’s cold comfort sometimes, but democracies also hold new elections at regular intervals so if things are going wrong in government, the electorate can change them. You can’t do that with kings or dictators. Bad government under an absolute monarchy or a one-party system such as China uses can continue for decades or even generations.
