What is the importance of forest as a resource?

Besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change. Yet, despite our dependence on forests, we are still allowing them to disappear.

Forests are an important natural resource due to the following reasons:
1. Economic causes: It is used as fuel in rural households and timber also has great value in the furniture market, Moreover many other products like rubber, coconut arecanut etc. having good export value is obtained from the forest resources.
2. Social use: Forest dwellers mainly comprising of tribals receive food from the fruits and other products obtained from these forests ensuring livelihood security as well as food security for them,
3. Ecological use: Due to carbon fixation property Forests reduce the level of pollution and purifies air so also it acts a good Carbon Sequestration method in bringing down the level of Green house gases.
4. Medicinal value: Some trees like eucalyptus, cinchona, etc. are used as ingredients in medicines.
5. Biodiversity increases with forest due to its nature of supporting wildlife, several micro-organisms and many invertebrates.
Hence forests are the best natural resources.
