India's wide range of physical features make this country a complete geographic study. In fact, India has every possible landscape that Earth has. From frigid mountains to arid deserts, vast plains, hot and humid plateaus, vast coasts and tropical islands, India's physical features cover every terrain.
Indian physical characteristics:
The Physical Features are the natural features of the Earth's surface. They also have another name known as "terrain".
Some of the important physical characteristics of India are:
i) the Himalayas:
- It is a range of very high mountain ranges that stretch across northern, northeastern, and western India.
- They are further divided into three smaller regions: Shivalik, Himachal Chain, and Himadri Chain.
ii) North Indian Plains:
- They consist of very large flatlands or alluvial lands. The Northern Plain is further divided into three parts: the Ganga Plain, the Punjab Plain, and the Brahmaputra Plain.
- The soils in these areas are fertile.
iii) Indian Great Desert:
- This includes Rajasthan and Gujarat.
- The Thar Desert is the largest with its sandy terrain and dry climate.
- The annual precipitation that occurs in these areas is less than 150 mm per year.
iv) Peninsula Plateau:
- It includes the Central Highlands and the Deccan Plateau.
- These areas are among the oldest land masses in the country.
- The foothills of the Western Ghats lie beneath the Deccan Plateau, while the foothills of the Eastern Ghats lie in the Central Highlands.
v) Coastal plains or coastal areas:
- The East Coast Plain lies between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, while the West Coast Plain lies between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea.
vi) Islands:
- The two main islands that form part of the Indian Territory are the Lakshadweep Islands and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
