Hindi and all of the regional languages of India are important. This is because, it is the langauge that gives your identity and hence it is called mother tongue not because you mother spoke it but it is as important as your mother without whom you miss identity. Hindi is mother tongue of 15% of people in India and there are atleast 10% who can converse in Hindi. So if you are new to a region and it happens to be some rural area, Hindi could help you out. Hindi is also the official language along with English and 23 other regionla languages in India.
