The Axe is a short story written by R.K. Narayan. Velan is a character in this story. He was a gardener he builds a bond and effect on the margosa tree. He went to margosa plant, gripped its stem with his fingers and said I can put my fingers around you and shakeup like this, Grow up little one grow up and grow fat, be fit to stand.

Some workers destroying the houses and cutting the trees, velan heard that sound and came out asked the workers don't cut this margosa tree, this is my child I planted it so don't cut.

The workers stopped their work. Even Velan had gone a very long distance. He said please wait till I am gone far.
