During the period of the early humans, river was the only source of water, but today it has changed by borewells, wells, city supply, etc.

River valleys are most fertile region and the first human settlement were all done to do agriculture. The fertile soil in these regions were best suited for agriculture. Hence people first settled near river valleys.
