Secularism basically means that the state has no religion. Individuals may practise their religion in personal capacity but they must not display religious symbilism or preferences in their official or business dealings. Secularism is absolutely necessary for smooth functioning of a multi religious state. The citizens are supposed to treat religion their private matter and not bring religious prejudices or favors in ordinary course of dealings with fellow citizens. This will assure everybody that he will get a fair deal irrespective of his faith in a particular religion.
