It provides the shortest maritime route bctwccn the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian and Western Pacific Oceans through the Gibraltar Strait, the Mediter- rancan Sea, the narrow Isthmus of Suez, the Red Sea, the Strait of Bab-el-Mandeb and the Gulf of Aden. The Suez Canal extends over a distance of 100 miles.
