The canal is used by European maritime trade companies to exchange goods with India, China and South East Asia. Before its construction the only way to make this journey was going around South Africa through the Cape of Good Hope route.

As the info-graphic explains, the canal shortened this path by 8200 kilometers. This was a huge cut off at the time since sea trade was very costly then. Of course this made maritime trade grow even more allowing global trade to be more powerful than ever.

But the canal was hugely underused by the Egyptian authorities. With a canal like that you should a very powerful economy. Imagine along the canal at the major population areas having ship repair centers, powerful ports and storage systems and with a country that has major petrol exports, ships can stop to fill their tanks. And other stuff that could be made that I am of course unaware of.

Instead None of this happened ! Just a couple ports that sailors rest at and the rest is desert…

Also with the current climate changes and the shrinking of the Northern Arctic Sea ice, it was feasible for ships to go with the Northern Route rather than the Southern one during summer months. The Northern Route shortened the voyage even more by approximately 4000 nautical miles.
