What is the importance of symbols of elements?

As you know there can be 118+ elements in the world, now what do you want to do, do you want to learn all the different ,  difficult names of elements or just there specific symbols assigned to them. It also helps scientist as they generally deal with very complex and large reactions and elements so if we can convert them into symbols it could save a lot of time .
