what is the importance of the megaspore mother cell(MMC) undergoing meiosis?

megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis to form 4 megaspores out of which 3 megaspores usually degenerates and 1 megaspore is functional which forms embryo sac i.e. female gametophyte.
