The Kalinga War was a war fought between the Mauryan Empire and the state of Kalinga. Kalinga was an important kingdom because it controlled the trade routes with Southeast Asia. Because of this, Ashoka, the Mauryan king, wanted to capture it. Therefore he lead his huge army to Kalinga in 261 BC.

During the Mauryan dynasty, the current day coastal Orissa was known as Kalinga. It was not under the control of the Mauryan Empire. King Ashoka thus waged a war to conquer it. Many people were killed in the war and several others were injured. King Ashoka was filled with remorse and sadness when he saw the dead and the injured soldiers in the battlefield. He thereafter decided not to fight any more wars. He embraced Buddhism after the Kalinga war and tried to spread peace and the policy of Dhamma far and wide in his empire.
