In greek mythology, Arachne was a famous weaver in her city. People said that Arachne should thank the goddess Athena for her skills. But Arachne refused to do so. She said that the gods helped her in no way ant it was all her hard work. Athena heard this and came to Earth in disguise as an old lady.  She wanted to give Arachne a second chance. In the form of an old lady, She tried to convince Arachne to thank the gods. But Arachne was very rude. Athena got angry and took her real form. She said that they could have a weaving contest and see who weaved better. Athena said that she would be the judge because if the people judged, they would surely say that Athena's is the best. They started the contest. After both of them finished, Athena said both of their tapestries were tied, both were beautiful. Then Arachne said , that they could have another contest unless Athena is scared. Athena became very angry hearing this and beat Arachne hard on her head. The people started laughing at her. Arachne felt really insulted. She tried to hang herself. But Athena said , ' You shall not die. You shall weave, forever.' And turned Arachne into a spider. She was the first spider, That's why Arachne means spider in greek. That's why ' Arachnophobia' in English means ' fear of spiders.
