Bassanio is a critical character to the Shakespeare's play - The Merchant of Venice . It has to be said that without Bassanio most of the play's conflicts would cease to exist. Bassanio struggles with money management, and his ridiculous solution is to woo the rich and beautiful Portia; however, in order to do that, he has to borrow some money to get it done. He asks Antonio for the loan, but Antonio can't do it at the moment. Antonio is a great friend, and doesn't want to let Bassanio down, so Antonio agrees to borrow money from Shylock in order to help Bassanio. Without Bassanio, Antonio would never have needed to go to Shylock for any kind of loan. The entire "pound of flesh" agreement never would have been made, and Antonio wouldn't have to be in a court case trying to avoid having a pound of his flesh cut from his body.
