The irony lies in the fact that , whilst most may consider gilded or marble monuments to be strong , in reality they are not . After a few years, they wither , deteriorate and eventually turn into ruins . The words of famous men like , like Shakespeare 's poetry , last forever . Even after his death , people still read it and talk about it . Ironically , the poem has outlived both man and monument and will continue to do so.
