Hi
hope this helps
The irony on the fourth stanza is that
Old Casper says that it is a famous victory but still says that there was tremendous loss of life. It was a foams victory but there were loss of life.

irony means difference between reality and appearance

the irony used in the last two lines here is that old man says that thousands of men were killed and it is a great victory.
