Explanation:

Sigma bond is a chemical bond formed by the linear or co-axial overlapping of the atomic orbitals of two atoms. A pi bond is a type of covalent bond that exists between atoms where the electrons are on top and bottom of the axis connecting the nuclei of the joined atoms.

Explanation:

  • So basically Sigma bond is formed by the overlapping of orbitals along their internuclear axis , i.e end to end overlap.

A pi bond is formed by the sideway overlapping of the orbitals  i.e lateral overlapping.

  • Sigma bond is a strong bond as the extent of overlapping is large

A pi bond is weak due to smaller extent of overlapping.

  • Sigma bond is formed by overlapping between s-s , s-p , and p-p orbitals.

A pi bond is formed by the overlap of p-p  orbitals only.
