Rice is considered the oldest cultivated cereal in the world, but no one knows when or where rice cultivation originated. Probably it first grew wild and was gathered and eaten by the people of South - east Asia thousands of years ago. However, archeologists have found evidence that people cultivated rice for food in about 5000 BC in southern China, Northern Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. From there rice spread northwards to the rest of china, then to Japan and Korea, westwards to India and southwards to Indonesia.
