Prime numbers are the numbers which has two distinct factors one and number itself.

Start checking backward  from largest 2 digit number and find which is prime number

Largest 2 digit number  is 99

99 = 1 * 99  = 3 * 33  = 9 * 11

Hence 6 Factors , not a prime number

Next is 98

98  = 1 * 98 = 2 * 49  =  7 * 14  

Hence 6 Factors , not a prime number

Next is 97

97 = 1 * 97   a prime number

Hence 97 is largest 2 digit prime number
