The law of reciprocal proportions (also called law of equivalent proportions or law of permanent ratios) is one of the basic laws of stoichiometry. It relates the proportions in which elements combine across a number of different elements. It was first formulated by Jeremias Richter in 1791.

✔️✔️The law of reciprocal proportion states that:

“When two different elements separately combine with a fixed mass of a third element, the proportion in which they combine with one another shall be either in the same ratio or some multiple of it.”

✔️✔️️For example,

⭕️ In methane 12 g of carbon react with 4 g of hydrogen.

⭕⭕️️carbon combines with oxygen and sulphur to form carbon dioxide and carbon disulphide respectively.

⭕️⭕️CO2 has the ratio of its component as C:O
=12:32 =3:8

⭕️⭕️CS2 has the ratio C:S

= 12:64
= 3:16
3:8::3:16=2:1
