The legend of the Northland is actually a story about Saint Peter and a little woman who made cakes. Saint Peter came to her door while travelling round the earth. He saw her making cakes and baking them on the hearth. He was almost fainting due to fasting, He asked her to give him a single cake. She made a very little cake. But as she baked it she thought it looked too large to give. She made another smaller cake for Saint Peter. But it looked bigger to give like the first one. She made another smaller cake thin as a wafer. At this Saint Peter grew angry. He said that the little woman was too selfish to live as a human being. He cursed her to be a woodpecker. She would get her food by boring and boring in the hard dry wood. The little woman flew out of the chimney. She was changed into a woodpecker. She can be seen in Northland with a scarlet cap on her head. All school boys have seen her boring in the wood.
