A 'legend' is a popular story from the past which is believed by many but one cannot prove whether it is true or not. It usually contains a message or a moral and is narrated to children. This poem is called a 'legend' because it preaches generosity towards fellow beings.

hope it helps you.............

Answer:

A legend is a traditional story which is belived or followed by the people.

In the poem "The legend of the Northland" is a traditional story taught to the children of Northland. This story is of Saint Peter who is believed to be the first disciple of Jesus Christ. He was a preacher who spread the noble ideas of Jesus Christ all over the world.

One day he was very much exhausted by preaching and fasting all day. At the evening he reached a bakery store of a woman whom he asked for a cake to eat.

The woman was greedy. She first selected a cake and was going to give it to St. Peter but thought that the cake was too big to be given away. So she baked a smaller cake but out of greed she didn't gave it to St. Peter and baked another cake as thin as a wafer. But at last she didn't gave anything to St. Peter.

He was very much angry of her greedy behaviour and said that she don't have any right to have human form and cursed her and she turned into a woodpecker who has to work hard all day to get food.

This story tells the lesson of non-greed to the children of northland and hence considered a legend.
