in an equilateral triangle the altitude is a bisector of the base and also perpendicular to the base

therefore half side of the base is a/2( see the figure)

apply Pythagoras theorem in any one Triangle

 {a}^{2}  = ( \frac{a}{2} )^{2}  + (altitude)^{2}

(altitude)²=3a²/4

altitude=√3a/2
