The coastline of India also includes the coastlines of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and Lakshwadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea.

Summing up all these coastlines, th total length of the coastlines will be 7517 km. Length of Coastline of the Indian mainland, that is the Indian peninsula, is 6100 km.

This coastline is surrounded by water on three sides, Arabian Sea in the west, Bay of Bengal in the east, and Indian Ocean in the south.

The long coast line of India is dotted with several major ports used for trade, commerce and transportation such as Kandla, Mumbai, Navasheva, Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Tuticorin, Vishakapatnam, and Paradip.

For ensuring protection to the mainland and other Indian boundaries, the Indian Coastline has an effective defence team, a separate force which is known as the Indian Coast Guard.

it was formed on February 1, 1977.
