Lens:

  • A lens is a transmissive optical devices which focuses or disperses a light beam by means of refractive.
  • A simple lens consists of a single piece of transparent material, while a compound lens consists of several simple lenses , usually arranged along a common axis.
  • Lens are made from materials such as glass or plastics, and are ground and polished or molded to a desired shape.
  • A lens can focus the light of to form a image, unlike a prism, which refracts light without focusing.
  • Devices that similarly focus or disperse waves and radiation other than visible light are also called lenses, such as microwave lenses, electron lenses, acoustic lenses, explosive lenses.

Types of lenses:

  • Aspheric lens
  • Cylindrical lens
  • Fresnal lens
  • Concave and convex lens.

Concave lens:

  • A concave lens is a lens that possesses at least one surface that curve inwards. It is diverging lens , means that it spreads out light rays that been refracted through it.
  • A concave lens is thinner at its centre of curvature than at its edges, and is used to correct short-sightedness (myopia).

Convex lens:

  • A convex lens is a lens that converges rays of light that convey parallel to its principal axis. It is also called as a converging lens.
  • A converging lens is a lens that are travelling parallel to its principal axis.

Uses of lens:

  • Used in a magnifying glass,
  • Prosthetics for the correction of visual impairments,
  • Attenuate light,
  • In imaging system,
  • Radar systems.
