What is the longitudinal extent of our country? state its significance?
Answers
Answer:
The longitudinal extent of India is from 68° 7’ E to 97o5’ E. The Earth rotates from West to East. So, the Sun appears to move from East to West. There is a corresponding time difference of one hour for every 15° of longitudinal difference. Due to this, there is local time difference of almost two hours between the extreme Eastern and Western parts of India.
Due to this time difference, one uniform Standard Meridian (82°30’E) has been chosen for India. It is so, that every place in India should have one standard time; that is known as Indian Standard Time (IST).
Thus, by adopting new norms and values and accepting as their own, unity and homogeneity of India has been promoted.

Answer:
The latitudinal and longitudinal extent of India is about 30o. The North-South extent is 3214 km and East-West extent is 2933 km. The distance between any two lines of longitude is maximum at the equator and goes on decreasing as one goes from the equator to the poles.
The main land of Indian sub continent extends between latitudes 8°4'N and 37°6'N and longitudes 68°7'E and 97°25'E. It decides the climate of the subcontinent, its significance in the geo-political position in the world. And the time lag is also decided by the longitudinal extent.
