Ideally, earth’s atmosphere should be neutral in nature since it is mainly composed of water, dust particles and other particulate matter. However, in recent times, high levels of pollution have contributed to the acidity of the atmosphere.

The chemical which is responsible for this acidity is sulphur dioxide (SO2), a compound released by factories and in minute quantities by vehicle exhausts. It is a harmful and toxic gas that can cause skin ailments and even cancer on contact with our skin.

The harmful effects of SO2 can be counteracted by making the atmosphere alkaline in nature so that its acidity is neutralised.

Answer ⇒ SO₂ (Sulphur Dioxide).

Explanation ⇒ Although Nitrogen is found is more amount then the sulphur on the Earth atmosphere, but the Reactivity of the Sulphur to form the acidic oxide is very much greater then that of the Nitrogen because Nitrogen does not reacts with the Oxygen under common conditions.

Now, Due to the more reactivity of the sulphur with oxygen, the major acidic oxide is Sulphur dioxide which is responsible for the pollution.

Hope it helps.
