The main causes of land degradation are-

1. Deforestation - Forests consists of many trees and the trees helps in binding the trees. when we ut trees then soil erosion takes place. therefore cutting of forest will affect the soil adversly.

2. Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides -Excessive use of fertilizers cause an imbalance in the quality of some nutrients in the soil.This imbalace adversly affect the vegetation.

3. Overgrazing - We graze our animals in the field and they eat the crop plant or other useful plants which cause degradation of land.

4. Salination - Due to the presence of more saline water(salt water) in the field , it damages the crops and cause land degradation.

5. Water logging - Excessive irrigation can cause rise in ground water level.This cause uprooting of crops and the field becomes plain.

6. Desertification - It is main cause of land degradation.Destruction of the biological potential of the land can lead ultimately to desert like condition.

7. Soil eroison - The washing away of soil by by wind or human activities such as blown away by wind or by tilling washes the soil away and land degradation takes place.
