In the poem, Maya Angelou draws a stark contrast between white Americans and black African Americans. Angelou elaborates the contrast between a bird who freely lives his own life, and a bird in cage, who is unable to fulfill his life due the restrictions put upon him. Actually, the caged bird here is the African Americans, who are oppressed by the White Americans, and are unable to access their right. The free bird, on the other hand, referred to the white Americans.
