The main component in plant cell walls is a compound known as cellulose. The cellulose is a structural compound, mainly carbohydrate, that is largely responsible for the structure of the plant cells. Aside from giving the cells structure, the cellulose also give the cell wall a protective nature- acting as a barrier to external factors.
