Federal government :-

  • There are two levels of government one at the centre and other at the state.

  • There is clear demarcation of powers by the written constitution between the central and state governments.

  • Some federal governments have dual citizenship like USA , where a person is the citizen of USA as well his native state in the country.

  • Example - India, USA

Unitary government :-

  • There is a single level of government only at the centre. Centre may create some sub units for administrative convenience but those units are under the control of the central government.

  • All powers are rested with the centre and there is no such demarcation.

  • It is characterised by single citizenship.

  • Example - UK
