the actual path walked by a person between initial to final position is known as distance
and
the shortest distance between initial and final position is known as displacement
sometime it may be equal to displacement but sometime it may not be equal
and

in the example given by me if the man moved A to C and then stopped then the distance and displacement would have been 10 kms (same)

Distance is the total distance covered and displacement is the shortest distance from the point where we ended to the point where we started.
Yes they can be equal.
