Plants :-

  • Plants do not have the ability to move from one place to another, as plants are rooted into the ground, exceptions are Volvox and Chlamydomonas.

  • Both plants and animals are living organisms

  • Plants can't move from one place to another

Animals :-

  • Animals can move from one place to another freely, and exceptions are Sponges and Corals.

  • Animals can move from one place to another because animals contain specialized protein to promote movement in the body.

Movement in plants

Movements in plant parts can be broadly classified into two categories:

Tropic movements:

  • Geotropism – Growth movements induced by gravity.
  • Phototropism – Bending of a plant towards the light.
  • Hydrotropism – Movement of a plant towards the water.
  • Thigmotropism – Response due to the stimulus of touch.

Nastic movements:

  • Nastic movements are rapid movements of plant organs in response to a stimulus that results from alterations in cell volume in a specialized motor organ called a pulvinus.

  • For example, handling of the touch-sensitive leaves of Mimosa pudica results in the folding of its leaflets within a few seconds and is an example of a thigmonastic movement.
