Answer:

Abstract

In this chapter, we will review the fundamentals of channel coding, with specific emphasis on short-packet transmission, one of the new challenging scenarios brought about by 5G. Focusing first on the binary-input additive white-Gaussian noise channel, we will analyze the performance of some of the coding schemes considered in 5G (including low-density parity-check codes and polar codes) for short, moderate, and large blocklength values. Furthermore, we will review recently developed information-theoretic tools that allow one to benchmark the performance of these coding schemes. Finally, looking beyond what is currently standardized in NR, we will consider transmissions over multiantenna fading channels and highlight through an information-theoretic analysis the importance of exploiting frequency and spatial diversity through the use of space-frequency codes, in applications that require a high reliability.
