When looking at maps we tend to forget that it is just an representation of something that may be approximated for better understanding of topic.
Consider a world map, you may see that Japan on the eastern edge is looks very small. But it is actually bigger that Germany and UK.
Area of Japan= 377,972 sq.km
Area of Germany= 357,168 sq. Km
Area of UK = 243,610 sq. Km
This kind of misleading happens due to various methods of projections and the purpose for which the map is used.
