Oesophagus or the food pipe is the part of our alimentary canal. It connects mouth to our stomach. It transports food taken in from mouth to our stomach for the life process of digestion. The food is made wet by the saliva, that is secreted in mouth, which contains an enzyme known as salivary amylase. By relaxation and contraction of our esophageal muscles, these movements caused due to the relaxation and contraction of the muscles, are called peristaltic movements.
