These enzymes convert the complex substances of food into simpler compounds which then provides energy.

Functions of large Intestine:
- Water, minerals, salts etc. are absorbed from large intestine into blood capillaries.
- Mucin is secreted by the walls of large intestine to lubricate the faeces.
- Several bacteria are present in large intestine which helps in digestion of food residue which remains undigested in small intestine.
The stomach stores and mixes the food received from the esophagus with the gastric juice. The gastric glands present in the walls of the stomach secrete several substances, which together constitute the gastric juice. The main components of gastric juice are hydrochloric acid, mucus, and pepsinogen. Hydrochloric acid dissolves bits of food and creates an acidic medium. In this medium, pepsinogen is converted to pepsin, which is a protein-digesting enzyme.
