Regardless of rural vs urban, Land is still a main mode of transport in India. Though, this statement thus answer your question for Rural India as well.
Based on some recent study carried out by authorities, within Rural India land transport, Bicycle is the most widely used form which is then followed by bus and scooters/motorcycles. Surprisingly, close to 30% of the population does not travel at all in these part of the country.

In rural india about one third of the population don't even travel by any means just walk remaining two third travel mostly by bicycle, tractor trolley, cart driven by donkey, muel or ox. Use of motor bikes and buses is increasing in relatively educated and developed villages.
