The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India has sanctioned a scheme to provide 5 Lakhs Solar Urja lamps (SoUL) to rural school students with high quality, affordable clean light in the form of solar study lamps through skill transfer to local communities. The scheme is based on the pilot 1 million solar study lamps distribution to rural school students implemented by IIT Bombay in 2014-16 (millionsoul.iitb.ac.in) and will be implemented in the various states of India. The distinctiveness of the scheme is that it is not limited to distribution of solar study lamps, but aims at ‘Localization Of Solar Energy’ through building skills and capacities of local communities in rural areas to independently handle renewable technology based intervention.
