The main purpose of Annealing is to reduce the hardness of material. Besides this it is also used :—

1. To relieve the internal stress of material.

2. To restore ductility for further facilation of material.

3. To increase the machinability of material.

Annealing is also called the softening method. In Annealing , material is cooled very slowly from predetermined temperature. Such a slow cooling is practically done in furnace atmosphere. Because of slow cooling Rate transformation is takes place at higher temperature just below the Nose temperature in TTT diagram and that's the reason more likely grains are coarser in nature and this is reason behind reduction in hardness.
