What is the main source of information about the tribal communities?
Answers
Hello there,
One of the main sources of information about the Ahoms is Buranji.
Buranji literally meant "a store that teaches the ignorant" (in the : bu ignorant person; ran teach; ji store). They were first started by Chaolong Sukapha (the first Ahom king) in the Ahom Kingdom. It included not only written information about the Ahoms but also about neighboring tribes and smaller kingdoms, like the Kacharis, etc.
Writing of Buranjis continued on and came to be known as a synonym for history in Assamese culture.
So, we can pretty much gather major information about their 600 years of rules from the Buranjis. Apart from that, we have 220+ ethnic groups in Assam, some of which were in Assam long before the Ahoms set foot.
However, there are very few written sources to trace back the whats and hows of the Tai Ahoms in their ancestral land (before coming to Assam). It is said that the King Sukapha had brought with him worship manuals, astrological treatises, chronicles and romances etc.
Apart from that, Tai Ahoms share ancestral history with other branches of Great Tai ( from Burma, China , Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. Over time, historians have gathered quite some knowledge from them too about Tai-Ahom’s history prior to entering the valley of Brahmaputra.
Hope my answer helps you.
