Answer:

The themes of dedication, dread, injustice, acceptance, responsibility, and guilt are explored in Penelope Fitzgerald's novel The Axe.

Explanation:

  • A woodcutter once resided in a little community. He was very sincere and honest in his work.
  • He went into the surrounding forest every day to cut trees. He returned the woods to the hamlet and sold them to a trader to make some money.
  • He barely had enough money to cover his expenses, yet he was content with his modest lifestyle.
  • One day, when he was felling a tree next to a river, his axe slipped from his grasp and landed in the water.
  • He could not have imagined trying to rescue it on his own because the water was so deep. He had just one axe, and it was in the river.
  • He started to get really anxious as he wondered how he would now be able to support himself! He prayed to the Goddess since he was so dejected.
  • Sincere prayer caused the Goddess to manifest in front of him and inquire, "What is the issue, my son?" The woodcutter described the situation and asked the Goddess to return his axe.
  • Is this your axe, the Goddess questioned as she reached deep into the water and pulled out a silver axe. When the woodcutter saw the axe, he replied, "No."
  • The Goddess then dipped her hand back into the water and inquired, "Is this your axe?" while displaying a golden axe. When the woodcutter saw the axe, he replied, "No."
  • Take another look, the Goddess commanded. Son, are you certain that this expensive golden axe is not yours? No, it's not mine, the woodcutter replied.
  • I can't use a golden axe to fell the trees. It serves no purpose for me.
  • The Goddess grinned as she dipped her hand back into the water, pulled out the man's iron axe, and enquired, "Is this your axe?" The woodcutter said, "Yes! It's all mine! Thanks a lot! His honesty greatly satisfied the Goddess, who then rewarded him by giving him both his iron axe and the other two axes.
  • Moral: Always be truthful. Sincerity is always appreciated.
