Answer:

‘Lawley Road’ is a satirical short story written by R. K. Narayan. The main theme of the story is arbitrariness, corruption and showy nature of the Indian officials especially of the Municipal Chairman of the town of Malgudi, a fictitious but typical Indian town.

The main theme revolves round the Municipal Chairman. He is good for nothing fellow. He is negligent to his duty. On Independence day he woke up and thought to do something great but it was only for publicity. All roads were renamed and consequently, the town became unrecognizable.

The author brought out a vivid account of the follies and whimsical activities of the Municipal Council in a satiric and humorous way.

The statue of Sir Frederic Lawley is sold and shifted to the news reporter’s household. The statue is taken back because of a nation wide public agitation. Indirectly the story suggests the corruption of political leaders.

Lawley is actually a character who builds the Malgudi town and this character is believed to be based on the then Governor of Madras.

In fact there is a story called Lawley Road, about a municipality where the roads are named after Freedom Fighters after Independence. In Malgudi, R K Narayan probably created a mini India and we can easily relate to the characters as much as you travel through each of the titles.
